Fibromyalgia

  • About Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers now believe that the disorder is a reflection of the brain’s inability to accurately interpret sensations; amplifying normal sensations to be considered painful.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia often begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. However, in other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event.

Women are much more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression.

  • How We Can Help

Research indicates that Fibromyalgia is a neuromuscular condition characterized by extreme fatigue and low energy, muscle cramps, nerve over-excitation and numbness, and generalized pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, EQ Virtual can help you get the care you need from the comfort of your own home; not having to expend energy which is a precious resource when dealing with fibromyalgia. At any stage of the disease, we can help with:

    • Ordering blood tests and x-rays, or any other diagnostic test
    • Referrals to medical spxecialists (rheumatology and pain clinics)
    • Medication refill and delivery – no need to leave home for your prescriptions
    • Coordinate care with family doctors

Although we aren’t a permanent solution for those suffering with fibromyalgia, we will be there to support you through acute illness and flare-ups. We can coordinate care with your health care team and our team of specialists.
  • Symptoms

In general, treatments for fibromyalgia include both medication and self-care. The emphasis is on minimizing symptoms and improving general health. No one treatment works for all symptoms. General symptoms may include:

    • Widespread pain: The pain associated with fibromyalgia often is described as a constant dull ache that has lasts for at least three months. Widespread pain means that it occurs on both sides of the body, above and below the waist.
    • Fatigue: People with fibromyalgia often wake up tired despite sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many patients have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.
    • Cognitive difficulties: A symptom commonly referred to as "fibro fog" impairs the ability to focus, pay attention and concentrate on mental tasks.
    • Other problems: Many people who have fibromyalgia also may experience depression, headaches, and pain or cramping in the lower abdomen.
  • Treatment

While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of strategies (exercise, relaxation and stress-reduction, physiotherapy, dietary changes, etc.) and medications can help control symptoms.

    • Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers may be helpful but your doctor might suggest a prescription pain reliever. Narcotics are not advised because they can lead to dependence and may even worsen the pain over time.
    • Antidepressants: Antidepressants may help to ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. Your doctor may also prescribe certain antidepressants for nighttime to help promote sleep.
    • Anti-seizure medication: Medications designed to treat epilepsy are often useful in reducing certain types of pain when prescribed at lower doses.
